When your computer breaks down, freezes up, or freaks out, your first response may be to call someone to come and repair it, or take it to your local PC repair guy. But before you pick up the phone or drag your computer out to the car, here's an alternative -- online computer repair services can often fix your computer right over the Internet.
I see so many cases where computers get fouled up simply because people have failed to install a good anti-virus program. Lots of people get a free trial of Norton or McAfee when they buy a new computer, then let that protection lapse when the freebie expires, not wanting to pay a fee for the updates. But anti-virus software does not have to be expensive.
No fax machine? No problem! There are several ways to send a fax, just by sending an email. Email to fax servers allow you to send a fax by composing an email which contains the text you want to send, or an attached document. I've reviewed several fax-by-email services that offer free trials, and I also have a longer list of web-based internet faxing resources, some of which are completely free.
What would happen if suddenly your Facebook or Twitter account disappeared? It happens all the time -- people forget their passwords, their account gets hacked, or accidentally deleted. For some people, it would be no big deal. Others who have made social media an important part of their social life might consider it devastating to lose all their posts, photographs, profile entries, and friend lists.
A worried reader asked me this: "I'm concerned about my online privacy, so I want to hide my IP address. How can I do this?" In my answer, I explained that it is possible to hide or "spoof" your IP address. But if you're thinking about doing that, it's important to understand that your IP address DOES NOT personally identify you when you use the Internet.
