\___/ \___/ "Why Surf When U Can Ride The Bus?" \___/

Greetings TOURBUS Riders,

I hope you all got Patrick's introductory posting last week. If not,
you can find it on the archives at the new TOURBUS World-Wide Web site.
The address (URL, for you techies) is:

   http://csbh.mhv.net/~bobrankin/tourbus

We'll be sending out a TOURBUS posting every Tuesday & Thursday. If you
don't get yours on time, it could be due to a network delay or (perish
the thought) because the dreaded mail-eating Loch-Nett monster has
swallowed it whole. If you're desperate for your TOURBUS fix, you can
always check the Archives on the Web site.

As Patrick mentioned, TOURBUS will be a "sponsored" list. This means that
a short commercial message will be included at the beginning and end of
each TOURBUS segment to help defray the cost of operating the list, and to
make it worth our while to bring you a free high-quality service.

Administering a list of tens of thousands of subscribers, answering
inquiries, researching topics, and oh yeah... the actual writing all does
consume a lot of time. And you can be sure the sponsors that choose to come
along for the ride will have some exciting and useful products to make your
online experience even better.

If you're curious about advertising & rates, you can find information on
the TOURBUS web site, or just send e-mail to BobRankin@MHV.net with
Subject: SEND TBRATES to get an automated reply.

Are You Access-Impaired?
--------------------------

If you don't have direct access to the Internet through your BBS
or online service, you're not alone. About half the world's countries
are still limited to a simple e-mail connection to the Net.

Even though the TOURBUS will be stopping at lots of FTP, Gopher, and
World-Wide Web sites, you'll still be able to access almost every resource
you discover here if all you have is e-mail access.

My free comprehensive document, "Accessing The Internet By E-Mail" reveals
how to do almost anything on the Internet using simple e-mail commands, and
it's even available in 15 languages! To get the latest edition, send e-mail
to one of the addresses below.

   To: mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu
Enter only this line in the BODY of the note:
     send usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email

   To: listserv@ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu
Enter only this line in the BODY of the note:
     GET INTERNET BY-EMAIL NETTRAIN F=MAIL

   To: mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk
Enter only this line in the BODY of the note:
     send lis-iis e-access-inet.txt

You can also get the file by anonymous FTP at one of these sites:

   Site: rtfm.mit.edu
      get pub/usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email
   Site: ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu
      get NETTRAIN/INTERNET.BY-EMAIL
   Site: mailbase.ac.uk
      get pub/lists/lis-iis/files/e-access-inet.txt

You should get a copy even if you have full access, because the techniques
I describe for e-mail searching via archie, veronica, lycos, whois and
netfind just might save you a bit of time and/or money! TIP: Make
sure you get Version 4.71, since it's the latest as of this writing.

The Ugly Bus
-------------

If you've got a graphical web browser, and you're in the mood for a
hearty guffaw, then you owe it to yourself to see the sad, ugly bus
that I slapped up on the TOURBUS web page. Okay, maybe it's not all
that bad, but we *do* need a new logo.

If you're artistically inclined, here's your chance for fame and glory!
Send in your logo ideas and if we choose yours, we'll put it on the
TOURBUS web page along with a hotlink to your own address. If you're
a graphic designer, the exposure could be good for business!

Here are the Contest Rules:

1) All submissions must be in GIF or JPEG format.
2) E-mail files in MIME or uuencoded format to BobRankin@MHV.net
3) Submissions cannot be returned.
4) Winning entry becomes the property of TOURBUS owners.
5) Do not fold, bend, staple, spindle or mutilate.
6) Decision of the judges is completely arbitrary and irrational.

TOURBUS officially starts to roll on July 20. Tell a friend to subscribe,
and I'll see you on the 'Bus!
