                  TODAY'S STOP: THE INTERNET WIRETAP

"This mall has EVERYTHING" -- Jake Blues, The Blues Brothers

I just spent the last three hours writing a great TOURBUS post
on how to use HOMR (the Helpful Online Music Reference at the
MIT media lab) only to discover that HOMR just broke :(

Needless to say, I am hating life right now. But hey, I'll
just save the HOMR post for later and instead talk about one of
my favorite Internet sites in the world: the Internet Wiretap.

When I first started out on the Internet, I thought that Gopher
was the coolest thing since Debbie Gibson disappeared from radio
station play lists. After a while, though, my love of Gopher
waned as I got bored with bouncing from place to place looking
for something -- anything -- that interested me. And then I
found the Internet Wiretap.

Why is Wiretap so cool? Well, provided that you are able to overlook
their tongue-in-cheek name ("The Internet Wiretap") and Internet
address (WIRETAP.SPIES.COM), Wiretap houses one of the most extensive
repositories of government documents and electronic books I have
ever seen. Better still, they are able to collect a whole bunch
of information on a myriad of other topics and house this information
in one place.

To put it simply, I believe that the Internet Wiretap is the
best and most complete one-stop Gopher site there is!

You can reach the Internet Wiretap through Gopher

     gopher://wiretap.spies.com/

or FTP

     ftp://wiretap.spies.com/

Different parts of the Wiretap will appeal to different people,
but for those of you who will be accessing Wiretap through Gopher,
there are three sections of Wiretap that you should definitely
visit:

     1. Electronic Books at Wiretap,

     2. Government Docs (US & World), and

     3. Wiretap Online Library.

The Electronic Books at Wiretap menu will knock your socks off.
They have the complete text from books ranging from Aesop's "Fables"
to Winifred Kirkland's "The Joys of Being a Woman." All of these
books are public domain, and you can pull them up on your screen
with a simple click (just don't let your boss or teacher know) :)

The Government Docs menu is a God-send, and has saved my academic
butt many a time. If you are in high school or college, bookmark
the Government Docs menu. You will soon see that it is one of
the most important academic sites on the Internet.

The last section, the Wiretap Online Library, is a great place
to browse if you are looking to have some fun and kill some time.
You'll find information ranging from Airport 3 letter abbreviations
to the NCAA Letter of Intenet Rules.

By the way, before I close, I have one file in Wiretap that I
would particularly like to recommend. If you have the time,
go to the "Wiretap Online Library," then to "Humor," then to
"Everything Else," and finally to "Idaho Does Not Exist."
The first half of the article is pretty lame, but the second
part (the part that begins "THE 'STATE' OF IDAHO: ...") is a
hoot :)

That's it for this Tourbus ... I know this may seem to be short,
but believe me, you have just been dropped off at the Grand Canyon
of Gopher sites :)

... besides, I'll flood your mailbox with a 300+ line post about
HOMR once it comes back on-line :)
