TODAY'S STOP: NEW-LIST
TODAY'S ADDRESS: NEW-LIST@VM1.NODAK.EDU

Today's stop is going to be a little short (and a little late;
I'm sorry ... I've been cramming for a major Econ test that I
have to take on Thursday, and I forgot that I was supposed to
write Tuesday's Tourbus).

However, besides being a few days late, today's Tourbus stop
is also on my "top five" list of essential Internet resources
(the other four resources are Yahoo, NandO, the U Mich Libraries
gopher site, and Infoseek (we'll talk about these last two later)).

Anyway, Marty Hoag's NEW-LIST is the single most important point on the
Internet for finding out about new e-mail discussion or distribution
lists that you can join. When a new e-mail list is created, or when an
old list undergoes a change (like a change in sites), an announcement
about that list is usually posted to NEW-LIST. If you are a NEW-LIST
subscriber, you can find out about new e-mail lists before ANYONE
else!

What makes the list announcements on NEW-LIST so cool is that
you not only find out the name of the lists, but you also get
a one or two paragraph summary telling you a little bit about
each list. You even get directions on how to subscribe to each
of these new e-mail distribution or discussion lists.

Neat, huh?

To subscribe to NEW-LIST, just send an e-mail letter to

     LISTSERV@VM1.NODAK.EDU

(that's "vee-em-won") with the command

     SUBSCRIBE NEW-LIST YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME

in the body of your e-mail letter, replacing YOURFIRSTNAME
and YOURLASTNAME with your first and last names.

For example, if you were ultra-cool and legendary mambo
king Tito Puente (and would you believe that you can't find
a single one of his albums in Tuscaloosa?!) and you wanted
to subscribe to NEW-LIST, you would send an e-mail letter to

     LISTSERV@VM1.NODAK.EDU

with the command

     SUBSCRIBE NEW-LIST TITO PUENTE

in the body of your e-mail letter :)

A few days after you send this letter, you should start receiving
posts from NEW-LIST. You may notice that a lot of the list
announcements posted to NEW-LIST are for, pardon my bluntness,
extremely dull lists. For example, a list dedicated to the discussion
of the agricultural policies of sub-saharan Africa may not
necessarily appeal to you (or to any other living mammal).

However, from time to time a list that interests you (e.g. a list
dedicated to the discussion of mambo king Tito Puente!!) will be
announced on NEW-LIST ... and this is why I placed NEW-LIST on
my list of the five most important resources on the Internet.

Besides ... both ROADMAP and TOURBUS were first announced on
NEW-LIST (and my upcoming web workshop -- ATLAS -- will be
announced there too). :)
