TOURBUS - NOVEMBER 2, 1995
TODAY'S STOPS: THE UMICH LIBRARY
TODAY'S ADDRESSES: gopher://gopher.lib.umich.edu:70/1

I have some tragic news that will, I am certain, make all of
the Roadmap workshop alumni cheer quite loudly: at 9:24 AM CST
on Tuesday, October 24, the University of Alabama was, once
again ... brace yourself ... squirreled :)

A memorial service for the char-broiled squirrel will be held at
the UA mainframe computer center ... once we all stop laughing.

Anyway, I recently mentioned that my five favorite (and essential)
Internet resources are:

     1. Yahoo (which we talked about on August 3),
     2. NandO (which we talked about on August 22),
     3. NEW-LIST (which we talked about on September 26),
     4. Infoseek (which we'll talk about soon), and
     5. The University of Michigan Library Gopher.

If you missed any of these first three TOURBUS stops, drop on
by the TOURBUS garage at http://csbh.mhv.net/~bobrankin/tourbus/
and rummage through the TOURBUS archives (if you are new to the
Internet, or if you don't have a Web browser, you probably will
want to first send an e-mail letter to LISTSERV@UA1VM.UA.EDU
which says GET NEWUSER PACKAGE F=MAIL in the body of your e-mail
letter).

The University of Michigan Library Gopher site is at

     gopher://gopher.lib.umich.edu:70/1

If you have a Web browser, just enter this address in the "location"
box. If you don't have a Web browser, just type

     gopher gopher.lib.umich.edu

at your system's command prompt.

What I like the most about the UMich library gopher is that
it is one of the most complete and best maintained Gopher sites
that I have ever seen. It is also one of the best sites on the
Internet for students who are doing research for term papers (and,
since I am an undergrad at the University of Alabama, this is
*very* important to me).

I use this example a lot, but let's assume that it is 3:00 AM
and I have a paper due at 8:00 AM on the Laws of William the
Conqueror (and no, William the Conqueror's last name was NOT
"Gates").

This information (and thousands of other documents) is available
at the UMich Library gopher! Since Bill the Conqueror was a
historical figure, I click on "Social Sciences Resources."
In the Social Sciences menu, I click on "History." Since I
am looking for a historical document, in the "History" menu
I click on "Historical Documents and Treaties." I then click on
"Famous International Documents" and I have reached the motherlode!
A click on the "Laws of William the Conqueror" shows that William's
11th law was "It doesn't ship until Lotus doesn't run." (just
kidding).

This last paragraph may be confusing to read, but once you
check out the site you will see that the UMich Library gopher
is actually pretty easy to figure out. They really have taken
a common-sense approach to the way they catalog their information.

How is the UMich Library gopher different from the Internet
Wiretap (see TOURBUS -- July 27)? Well, UMich has a whole lot
more information (although they are sadly lacking that wonderful
document that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Idaho does
not exist (despite the fact that some really nice ladies who
*claim* to work for the "Idaho" PBS station have decided to
woo me)). The UMich Library gopher is also a heck of a lot more
intuitive than the Wiretap gopher.

That's today's stop. Point your Web browser to

     gopher://gopher.lib.umich.edu:70/1

or type

     gopher gopher.lib.umich.edu

at your system's command prompt, and see if you like the
UMich Library Gopher as much as I do :)

TODAY'S SOUTHERN WORD OF THE DAY
--------------------------------

FARN - adjective. Not local.
Usage: "I cudnt unnerstand a wurd he sed ... must be from some
        farn country."

(Special thanks goes to Alan Ross Goddard for today's "wurd")
