"Jawjuh")! Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, your fearless bus driver is driving today's bus remotely from the site of this year's Georgia Educational Technology Conference. :) Before we start the latest journey of our little bus of Internet happiness, and before I head of to bed (I have two more presentations early tomorrow morning), I want to give a special thanks to both Dave Taylor and AdvisoryPanel.com (see the bus logo above) for making today's TOURBUS post possible ... *--------------------------------------------------------------------* Jump start your Web pages with a copy of the best-selling book "Creating Cool HTML 3.2 Web Pages" by guru Dave Taylor. For info and FREE online HTML lessons, visit *-----------( http://www.intuitive.com/taylor/cool-web )-------------* For some reason, I really like to watch the Kentucky Derby on television. I have never really cared much for gambling, so my interest in the Derby is not financially motivated. Instead, I just like to watch the race on TV and look on in amazement as the world's finest racehorses, jockeys, trainers, and owners come together once a year for what is truly one of sport's most prestigeous events. For the past couple of years, several TOURBUS riders have repeatedly asked me to pull our little bus of Internet happiness into some of the Web's many Kentucky Derby Web sites (and the Web sites for the other races in the "Triple Crown"). Somebody even walked up to me at the conference yesterday and asked me to write a post about the Derby. Okay, folks ... I can take a hint. For those of you want to do more than watch the Derby on network TV, I am turing the wheel of today's TOURBUS over to Drew Ivan (drew@ctnet.com) who is going to take you to all three stops on the Triple Crown! As I said earlier, I have never really cared much for gambling, so today's TOURBUS post is certainly not a primer on, or an endorsement of, gambling. Rather, today's post is an interesting and educational look at the animals, trainers, jockeys, and owners that are all part of the the Triple Crown experience. :) Take it away, Drew ... THE TRIPLE CROWN ---------------- Each Spring for over a hundred years, the nation's top thoroughbred racehorses have faced off in a trio of races called the Triple Crown. Only eleven horses have won all three races, but the chance to see the twelfth Triple Crown winner keeps people turning out to watch the races each year. Because horse racing doesn't get a lot of attention until the Triple Crown is quite near, I've assembled the following list of links with information about this year's races and the horses that are hoping to win them. SOME BACKGROUND --------------- Two of the racing industry's leading publications have online editions where fans can get news and information about Triple Crown contenders. The Blood Horse Interactive at http://www.bloodhorse.com has a section called Triple Crown Mania where all the important info is kept. The Thoroughbred Times Online http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com has a similar section called Racing to the Triple Crown. I think their coverage is a little more organized and makes better use of hyperlinks. Once you're up to speed on the key players, you can visit the tracks where the races are held. THE TRACKS ---------- The first race of the Triple Crown is the Kentucky Derby, held at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday of May. http://www.churchilldowns.com There's a lot of history and tradition associated with the Derby, and you can learn about all of it at Virtual Churchill. For instance, did you know that 2,000 Mint Juleps were sold in 1939 and about 80,000 were sold in 1993? Two weeks later, it's time for the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Baltimore. http://www.pimlico.com Then, in June, the Triple Crown wraps up with the final, and longest, race, the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in New York. http://www.nyracing.com/belmont/index.html The Belmont Stakes is one lap around the country's longest racetrack -- one and a half miles. For many horses, it's the only time they'll race that far. Any horse that can win all three of these races in a six week time span is truly something special -- and, as I mentioned above, quite rare. FOR MORE INFO ------------- For more information, the place to be is on derby-list, the Internet's email-based horse racing discussion list. You can find out how to subscribe at http://www.inslab.uky.edu/~derby/index.html but be forewarned: derby-list is a very active list, and you can expect dozens of messages per day! BONUS URL --------- No discussion of horse racing on the Internet would be complete without mentioning Virtual Owners Partnership. http://www.vop.org VOP is a group of Internet-based thoroughbred owners. We haven't owned any Triple Crown-caliber horses (yet), but we've been fairly successful in fairly average races at Chicago tracks.
