ZDTIPS
------

Looking for quick, behind-the-scenes tips on how to _REALLY_ use software
products like Netscape Communicator, Novell Netware, or Microsoft Word 97?
ZDTips might be exactly what you are looking for.

ZDTips is an e-mail based, software product tip service offered by The Cobb
Group, a division of technology media superpower Ziff Davis (publishers of
Computer Shopper, MacUser, MacWEEK, PC Computing, PC Magazine, and Yahoo!
Internet Life). The good news is that ZDTips is free. The bad news is
three-fold:

     1) Even though ZDTips is e-mail based, the only way that I have
found to subscribe to the free service is through ZDTips' Web
        page (I'll keep looking for another way, though);

     2) The tips are pretty short (usually just a paragraph or two);
        and

     3) You only get one tip a week (major bummer).

Still, ZDTip's coverage of software products is pretty impressive. In
fact, can find a complete list of all of the software products that ZDTips
covers at ZDTips' Web page at

     http://www.zdtips.com/

Subscribing to one of ZDTips' free tips services is pretty easy. Just
click on the name of the software title that you are interested in, type in
your name and e-mail address (on the next page), and click on the
"Subscribe" button. That's it. :)

Remember, though, that you have to subscribe to each of the tip services
individually. This means that if you want to receive tips about Netscape,
Visual J++, Access, and Quark, you'll have to subscribe to the Netscape tip
service, then the Visual J++ tip service, then the Access tip service ...

... Now if only ZDTips offered tips on what you're supposed to do in that
round room at the beginning of Riven. :)

SUPER, NATURAL
--------------

Ted Burkmar, a long-time TOURBUS rider from the Great White North (a.k.a.
"Canada") wanted me to tell everyone that

The Government of British Columbia, the most westerly province of
Canada on the Pacific Ocean, has made available a free
screen saver showing 20 beautiful images, mostly natural. The
photographs are professional, of calendar quality. There is a
preview button to view the pictures if one wishes to do so. Many
of your readers around the world might be interested in accessing
this site & downloading it for their computers:

MMM ... OLESTRA!
----------------

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: one of the most daunting online
tasks is sorting through the piles of mis-information on the Net to find
those few nuggets of "truth." This is especially true when it comes to
finding accurate food and nutrition information online.

Fortunately, the kind folks (like Cindy Roberts) at the Food and Nutrition
Information Center at the United States National Agricultural Library have
taken the time to weed through _THOUSANDS_ of sites on the Web to create a
huge index of the best (and most accurate) food and nutrition resources on
the Internet. The call their index, oddly enough, the "Index of Food and
Nutrition Internet Resources," and you can find their index on the Web at

     http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/fnic.html

You'll find that their index is pretty complete, and it is broken into
categories ranging from "Anorexia and Bulimia" and "Child Nutrition and
Health" to "Herbal Information" and "Vegetarian Nutrition." :)

MMM ... COOKIES!
-----------------

It never fails. Every year in my Thanksgiving Spam post I tell everyone
that my cookies are much better than the fake Neiman Marcus cookies, and
every year I get a _BUNCH_ of mail saying that the fake cookies are quite
yummy, thank you. Well, you decide for yourself.

Thanks to the help of Phil in Chicago, I am happy to announce that Neiman
Marcus has actually put the fake cookie recipe on their company's homepage.
You can find the story behind the fake cookie recipe at

     http://www.neimanmarcus.com/custserv/cookie.htm

and the fake cookie recipe itself is on the Web at

     http://www.neimanmarcus.com/custserv/recipe.htm

By the way, my far superior, WORLD FAMOUS chocolate chip cookie recipe can
be found at

    http://www.brigadoon.com/~crispen/cookie.html

And trust me, my recipe is better. :P

That's it for this week. Have a safe and happy weekend.

TODAY'S SOUTHERN WORD OF THE DAY
--------------------------------

A few weeks ago, Dr. Franklin Drucker, a psychiatrist in Santa Monica,
California, sent me a copy of "Lord Ashley Cooper's Dictionary of
Charlestonese." Compiled by the "News and Courier" (I guess of Charleston,
South Carolina), the 25 cent booklet is overflowing with some _GREAT_
Southern words.

I'm still trying to find some information on where y'all can find a copy of
the dictionary. Until I find out some more information for you, though, I
don't think anyone will mind if I "borrow" a few of Lord Ashley Cooper's
words. :)

-----

LEASE (adjective). The smallest.
Usage: "Nah, that's the lease of my problems."

(Special thanks to Dr. Franklin Drucker and Lord Ashley Cooper for today's
wurd)

YOU CAN FIND ALL OF THE OLD SOUTHERN WORDS OF THE DAY ON THE SOUTHERN WORD
HOMEPAGE AT http://www.brigadoon.com/~crispen/word.html
