TODAY'S TOURBUS STOP(S): TIPWORLD AND ZDTIPS (PART 2)
TODAY'S ADDRESSES: http://www.tipworld.com/
Howdy, y'all. :) (This is Patrick - Bob is sending the post since my
e-mail is acting up...)
I am happy to announce that your fearless bus driver is now a regular
contributor to the "Website Wednesday" portion of the Steve and Johnnie
show on WGN radio in Chicago (WGN can be found at 720 on the AM dial, and
it reaches 38 states and a good chunk of Canada. You can also listen to a
Real Audio simulcast of WGN radio live on the Internet at
http://www.wgnradio.com/). You can hear me on WGN radio every Wednesday
night at 11:40-ish PM (Central Time) as I debunk urban legends that are
cluttering up the Information Superhighway.
For example, here is a message that has been floating around the Net recently:
Hello everybody,
My name is Bill Gates. I have just written up an e-mail tracing
program that traces everyone to whom this message is forwarded
to. I am experimenting with this and I need your help. Forward
this to everyone you know and if it reaches 1000 people everyone
on the list will receive $1000 at my expense. Enjoy.
Your friend,
Bill Gates
Now ask yourself, why would a man who has 23,000+ employees on his payroll
(and _MILLIONS_ of people around the world who are willing to beta test
Microsoft's software for _FREE_) pay US$1,000,000.00 to test a stupid
e-mail tracing program? That just doesn't make any sense. Heck, if Bill
Gates _really_ wanted to test an e-mail tracing program, he would go out
and buy some small organization (like, say, France) and tell _them_ to test
the tracing program for him. :)
As you can probably guess by now, your fearless bus driver called Microsoft
earlier this week to determine the validity of the "Bill Gates e-mail
tracing" story. And, as you also can probably guess by now, George Shaw, a
spokesman for Microsoft, told me that the story is "officially not true."
... now if only I can convince the millions of people who were stupid
enough to believe the "Bill Gates e-mail tracing" story to send me a dollar
as part of the new, top-secret "Bill Gates dollar tracing" program. :)
Anyway, thanks the help of several alert TOURBUS riders, I have finally
figured out how you can subscribe to ZDTips (TOURBUS, 4 DECEMBER 1997)
using nothing but e-mail. Before we get to that, though, I want to tell
you about another free tip service called "TipWorld."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TIPWORLD
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TOURBUS rider Scott Fields introduced me to
TipWorld, a free, e-mail based, tip service offered by IDG (the publishers
of PC World magazine and the ever-present "for Dummies" series of books).
TipWorld offers daily, e-mail based newsletters that give you the latest
tips on, and the latest news and gossip about, the software and online
issues that you are interested in. For example, here are just a couple of
the free, daily newsletters that TipWorld offers:
Virus Alert Tip of the Day
Dummies Daily: Microsoft Outlook
Microsoft Office 97 Tip of the Day
Windows NT Tip of the Day
Macworld's Mac OS Tip of the Day
Lotus Notes Tip of the Day
Dummies Daily: America Online
Dummies Daily: Searching the Internet
THE WEB Magazine's Sports Site of the Day
Netscape Navigator Tip of the Day
Microsoft Internet Explorer Tip of the Day
You can find a complete list of TipWorld's newsletters on the World Wide Web at
http://www.tipworld.com/
To subscribe to any of TipWorld's free, daily newsletters, just type in
your e-mail address in the appropriate box on the TipWorld Web page, select
the newsletters to which you would like to subscribe, and then select the
e-mail system that you are using (Eudora, Pegasus, AOL, etc.). That's it.
:)

ZDTIPS BY E-MAIL
----------------
Geoffrey John Pickering recently informed me that
it is indeed possible to subscribe to any of the ZDTips tip services using
nothing but e-mail. Here is how to do it.
1) Send a new e-mail letter to
listproc@zdtips.com
2) In the _body_ of your e-mail letter, type
join
replacing with the name of the list to which you
would like to subscribe, and replacing with your
name. For example, if your name were Bill Gates and you
wanted to subscribe to the Mactips list (to test your new Mac
tracing program), the body of your e-mail letter should be
join mactips Bill Gates
Here is the current list of ZDTips' 57 different mailing lists. A few of
these lists are discussion lists, not tips lists. Remember, if you want
just tips, sign up to the tips lists only!

That's it this week. I'll be back again on Saturday for TOURBUS Plus (for
those of you who are part of the plus bus), and then I am going to take a
week or two off to rest, relax, and recover from the 5 hours of oral
surgery that I have to undergo on Tuesday. So, since this will be last
time I talk to most of you until 1998, I want to wish you all a safe and
happy holiday season ... and watch out for those squirrels! :)
