Howdy, y'all, and greetings from sunny Alabama! We're in the middle
of our spring break here at the University of Alabama, so today's
TOURBUS post will be a tad bit short ... I want to head back to the
swimming pool just as quickly as possible. Actually, that's not
altogether true. I've spent most of my spring break cleaning out my
email inbox (an ongoing task), paying bills (also an ongoing task)
finishing up the new ADV-HTML archives (see below), procrastinating
about working on a major paper for my Monetary Theory class (I promise
I'll work on it this weekend), and actually writing the first couple
of lessons for my upcoming Web workshop (we'll talk more about the Web
workshop in a few weeks).

I do want to take a second before we start today's journey of our
little bus of Internet happiness to thank today's TOURBUS sponsors:
Intel (see today's bus logo) and FlowersFast. Make sure you visit
both of these companies to thank them for keeping our bus on the road
another week. :)

And now, on with the show ...

THE _NEW_ ADV-HTML ARCHIVES
---------------------------

As many of you probably know by now, TOURBUS isn't the only email list
with which I am associated. I am also the moderator of the Advanced
HTML discussion list (ADV-HTML). ADV-HTML is a free, email-based
question and answer forum dedicated to the discussion of advanced Web
page design topics. The best thing about the ADV-HTML list is that it

is HIGHLY moderated -- despite the fact that the list has well over
4,800 subscribers, it only generates an average of 6 email messages a
day. :)

Over the past couple of years, the ADV-HTML list has discussed almost
every major Web development topic imaginable: animated GIFs,
JavaScript onmouseovers, frames, HTML editors ... the list goes on and
on. I've been thinking for a long time that the archives of all of
the old ADV-HTML posts are truly an untapped resource. If there were
a way to convert _ALL_ of these posts into individual Web pages and
then slap a search engine on them, we'd have a pretty important tool
for both novice and advanced Web designers looking for answers to
their Web page design questions.

Well, that tool now exists. Earlier this week your fearless bus
driver converted all of the old ADV-HTML posts (all 5,000+ of them,
dating all the way back to the list's first post in October of 1995)
into individual Web pages and slapped a search engine on the front
end. The ADV-HTML list's new searchable archives can be found on the
Web at

     http://netsquirrel.com/adv-html/

One word of warning, though: this page is pretty utilitarian. The
archives are so new I simply haven't had the time yet to create a
fancy Web page for them. In fact, outside of the members of the ADV-
HTML list, you are the only people who know about the new, searchable
archives. [I promise I'll pretty the archives up after I finish my
Monetary Theory paper this weekend.]

By the way, if you _really_ feel adventurous and want to search
through all of the old ADV-HTML posts month by month, take a look at

     http://netsquirrel.com/adv-html/oldindex.html

Again, this page is pretty utilitarian, but it won't take you too long
to figure it out. Oh, and if any of this convinces you that you want
to subscribe to the ADV-HTML list (which is completely free), here's
what you need to do:

Send a new email letter to

          LISTSERV@UA1VM.UA.EDU

     (that's "you-ay-won-vee-em") with the command

          SUBSCRIBE ADV-HTML YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME

in the body of your email letter, replacing YOURFIRSTNAME and
YOURLASTNAME with your first and last names.

That's it. :)

CNN AUDIOSELECT
---------------

Brace yourself for the shortest TOURBUS write-up in history. :)

CNN is now broadcasting its audio on the Web. If you have a 28.8 KBPS
Internet connection or better and either Microsoft's Netshow software
or Real Network's Real Player (see http://www.audionet.com/faq/ for
more information about both of these programs), you can now use your
computer to listen to CNN, CNN Headline News, CNN International,
CNN/SI, or CNN en Espanol. Just point your Web browser to

    http://www.cnn.com/audioselect/

and pick the station you want to listen to. :)

That's it for this week (I told you that last one would be short!).
Have a safe and happy weekend, and I'll talk to you next week.
