             TODAY'S TOURBUS TOPIC: Web-Based Calendars

Have you ever seen a new product or service and thought "What a great
idea - I wish I'd invented it myself!"? You know, stuff like that
Topsy Tail hair styling loop - a little piece of plastic that sells
for $10 but it really serves a useful purpose.

Today's TOURBUS will highlight a useful new service that's free, and
not made of plastic. Digital calendars are becoming a hot item, and
having yours on the web might be just the ticket. Please pop in and

DITCH YOUR DAYTIMER?
--------------------

Digital web-based calendars are becoming popular these days, and there
are some really good ones to choose from. If you're anything like me,
life revolves around the inbox, and I'm always online. So keeping
your appointments online might make a lot of sense. You get access to
your personal calendar from any computer with an Internet connection,
and you can create a shared calendar to let your friends, colleagues
or secretary know what you're up to. Let's take a look at three web
calendar services and then you can decide which is best for you.

--------
WHEN.COM
--------

Here's a slick new site that still in beta testing, but I like what I
see. Selectable day/week/month views of your schedule are presented
in an eye-pleasing color scheme, and you can add items to your
calendar by clicking on the day and time. The look and feel is very
much like the paper-based organizers, but the advantage of going
digital is that you can switch to a week or month at a glance without
re-entering data.

WHEN offers an icon that shows the current day's weather or forecast,
if the date is in the future. You can even look backwards to find out
if it was raining last Friday. Another nice feature is the Events
Directory, which allows you to automatically add events to your
calendar which interest you, such as TV Shows, Movie Releases,
Cultural Events, Holidays, and Sports.

-----------------
JOINTPLANNING.COM
-----------------

This service offers personal digital calendars on the web, but excels
when it comes to group calendars. Organizations that have employees
or reps in multiple locations can use this service to keep in touch
and stay in synch. In addition to maintaining schedules by day, week
or month, you can:

 - create personal or group to-do items
 - schedule and view events by category
 - assign a priority level to to do items
 - view to-do items by completion status
 - create discussion groups that are viewable only by your organization
 - upload files so members of your organization can access them
 - download files that other members have uploaded

Other notable features include:

 - personal and organization address books
 - daily email notification of schedule and to-do items
 - voting on issues with secret or open ballots

The service guarantees the privacy of your information, and you can
even run it on your own site if you want to setup a co-branding
relationship.

--------------
YAHOO CALENDAR
--------------

Yahoo's calendar service is full featured. It does all that day,
week, month stuff and even talks to your Palm Pilot. But you know,
it's just so Yahoo-ish. I know it may sound harsh to criticize a
service because of the decor, but when you compare it to the other
players, it looks like something that was slapped together overnight.
Actually, it reeks of HTML. Low bandwidth is okay, but this hurts my
eyes.

Maybe I just don't want one site to take over the world. Maybe I'm
subconsciously rebelling against "portal mania" philosophy. Maybe I
don't WANT my email, stocks, weather, sports, maps and TV listings all
in one place. I love Yahoo, but viva la difference!

PUT *THIS* ON YOUR CALENDAR
