On with the show ...

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, it is time to talk about
one of my favorite topics: FOOD! There are literally TENS OF
THOUSANDS of recipe sites on the Web. In fact, I'd be willing to bet
that you have already compiled a huge list of your favorite recipe
sites. Here are a few of *MY* favorites.

----------
Epicurious
----------

Without a doubt, my favorite recipe site is Epicurious, the online
headquarters for Bon Appétit and Gourmet magazines. In fact, you only
need to know about one page at Epicurious: the Epicurious eating index
at

http://food.epicurious.com/e_eating/e01_index/e01index.html .

This page has links to EVERYTHING that is food-related! I'm not
kidding, folks. EVERYTHING! Here are just a few of the eating index
page's sections:

     - "Recipe File"
A searchable collection of over 8,000 recipes from Bon
Appétit and Gourmet magazines. That's right folks. EIGHT
       THOUSAND RECIPES!

     - "A Linked Lexicon"
An online food dictionary. Just key in the ingredient,
technique, or phrase you're looking for.

     - "What's Ripe"
Information about which fruits and vegetables are at their peak
at each of the seventeen major farmer's markets in the United
       States.

     - "Cooking Class"
An illustrated, step-by-step cooking demonstration from the
pages of Bon Appétit magazines. Eighteen different recipes are
       available.

     - "Cooking for Health"
Information on how to take the calories and fat out of your
       favorite foods.

     - "Forbidden Pleasures"
The opposite of "cooking for health." This section teaches you
how to prepare foods that aren't necessarily healthy (like
potato chips) but that we all secretly crave.

     - "Greatest Hits"
Past Epicurious features, including how to make fresh
mozzarella and even how to cook with beer. This is actually a
deceivingly large section. The BBQ HQ subsection is
particularly well done (no pun intended).

Guess what? This isn't even HALF of the information available on the
eating index page! Scroll down the page a little further and you will
find the "Occasions" section that offers cooking tips and recipes for
dozens of seasonal celebrations. The pull-down menu for the
"occasions" section is HUGE, offering recipes for seasonal
celebrations ranging from Super Bowl Sunday to Hanukkah and Christmas.

If you are in the United States, you might also want to check out
Epicurious' Thanksgiving page at

http://food.epicurious.com/e_eating/e04_thanks98/fullthanks.html

This page offers dozens of Thanksgiving recipes and cooking
techniques. And, in what is probably the greatest use of technology I
have seen in years, this page also offers a streaming video
demonstration of how to make gravy! :)

---------------
SOUTHERN LIVING
---------------

Of course, since today's TOURBUS post is coming to you from deep in
the heart of Alabama, it would be a sin for me to talk about cooking
sites and not mention Southern Living magazine's food page at

http://southern-living.com/food/index.html .

This page gives you links to dozens of high-quality recipes from the
pages of Southern Living magazine. And, just between you and me,
their recipe for pumpkin-praline pie is to die for! :)

A FEW UPDATES
-------------

If you have had problems retrieving the letters in the Urban Legend
Combat Kit, check out the Combat Kit's new Web page

http://netsquirrel.com/combatkit/ .

Also, for those of you who are wondering about the infamous "Design a
Button for TOURBUS contest," voting will begin late next week. We'll
talk more about this in next Thursday's post. In the interim, you can
see all of the contest's entries at

http://netsquirrel.com/tourbus/ .

Finally, your fearless bus driver will be in Pittsburgh all next week
(visiting my grandfather), so my one-and-a-half gigzillion email
letter backlog will probably be getting worse before it gets better.
Again, I apologize for letting my email inbox get so full, and I
promise to try to read and respond all one-and-a-half gigzillion
emails in my inbox as soon as I can. :)

That's it for this week!
