I've scoured the online world to find the best Internet software in
several categories, and I tried hard to find Macintosh equivalents
when available. All of the Windows programs are FREE, as are most
of the Mac versions, but there were a few cases where I couldn't find
a freebie or equivalent for the Mac. Let's have a look...

BOOKMARK UTILITIES
------------------

 QuikLink Explorer (WIN) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.quiklinks.com

Description: QuikLink Explorer replaces your Bookmark, Hotlist,
and URL files, taking you where you want to go with the click of a
button. If you use both Netscape and Internet Explorer, you'll like
Quiklink Explorer's ability to convert your lists between browser
formats or turn them into Web pages. QuikLink Explorer also uses an
easy to learn Windows Explorer interface which makes managing your
favorite sites on the web simple.

 URL Manager Pro (MAC) $25.00
 Home Page: http://www.url-manager.com

Description: URL Manager is a repository for your favorite Internet
addresses or URLs. URL Manager allows you to organize and collect
URLs in a hierarchical structure. Just drag hypertext links from
your Web browser to the URL Manager window to remember a URL.

SEARCH UTILITIES
----------------

 Web Ferret (WIN) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.ferretsoft.com/

Description: Web Ferret queries several search engines in parallel,
similar to web-based metasearchers. Searches can be narrowed by
choosing to match one keyword, several keywords or a phrase. Results
are returned very quickly into a window, and are clickable.

 Web Finder LE (MAC) FREE
 Download: http://tucows.aosi.com/mac/adnload/dlwebfindermac.html

Description: Web Finder is a an AppleScript based utility that
uses Internet search engines to find anything you like on the net,
giving you your result in the front most window of your favorite Web
browser. You can search the net and get results in a fraction of the
 time it would take otherwise.

ANTI-SPAM UTILITIES
-------------------

 Spammer Slammer (WIN) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.spammerslammer.com

Description: An easy to use anti-spam program, Spammer Slammer works
in conjunction with your mail program (Netscape, Outlook, Pegasus,
Eudora and others) to identify incoming spams. You can then easily
delete them in your mail program. The spam filtering rules are
 easily modifiable by the user.

 Spam Filter Maker (MAC) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.public.usit.net/nwcs/Spam/Spam.html

Description: This little program makes filters for the Eudora email
program to filter out spam in your inbox. The program is effective,
but has not been updated since 1997, so you might want to update the
list of spammers according to your own experience.

NETWORK UTILITIES
-----------------

 Spike (WIN) FREE
 Download: http://tucows.aosi.com/adnload/dlspike.html

Description: A nice suite of internet applications including ping,
traceroute, finger, whois and DNS lookup. If you don't know what
all those things are, do some homework before trying this tool.
Excellent performance, easy (un)install and fits in the system tray.

 AGNetTools (MAC) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.aggroup.com/AGNetTools/

Description: A multi-featured tool to help you get various types of
connection information. It includes lookup, traceroute, ping, whois,
finger and a throughput tool to check the quality of connections to
FTP and HTTP sites. A very useful and well done suite of tools.

NEWS TICKERS
------------

My Yahoo! News Ticker (WIN) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.netcontrols.com

Description: Your own personal organizer and custom launchpad
into the World Wide Web! Get the latest News, Sports, Stock
Quotes and more in the blink of an eye.

 Pointcast (MAC)
 Home Page: http://www.pointcast.com

The Pointcast website says that this service will no longer be
available for Mac users as of December 31, 1998. You can't download
it anymore, and I couldn't find a similar Mac service - sorry!

ATOMIC CLOCKS
-------------

 Atomic Clock (WIN) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.raha.com/tucows/softsync.htm

This little program will automatically set your system clock to the
master atomic clock when you run it, or you can add it to your startup
folder and have it run each time you turn on your computer. It does
of course require a connection to the Internet to perform this amazing
feat. It also has a nifty little digital clock display that'll float
on your desktop, and an alarm feature.

 Vremya (MAC) Shareware
 Home Page: http://www.lava.net/~kirill/software

Here's a similar Mac program for setting your system clock.

WHILE YOU WAIT
--------------

 Zing (WIN) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.zing.com

Description: The Zing player automatically delivers cool content
such as music, photography, jokes, movies, and art while you wait
for web pages to load into Netscape or Internet Explorer. Even
with a 56K modem, you'll spend a fair amount of time tapping your
toes, so give this one a try!

Sorry Mac users... Zing doesn't run on Macs, and I couldn't find
 anything similar to recommend.

FILE TRANSFER (FTP)
-------------------

 WS-FTP LE (WIN) FREE
 Home Page: http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/WS_FTP/index.html

Description: A highly rated file transfer program useful for updating
your web sites. Features remote file edits, and can set file
 permissions on remote file too.

 Fetch (MAC) $25.00
 Home Page: http://www.dartmouth.edu/pages/softdev/fetch.html

Description: This is the one everybody recommends for Mac file
transfer. Full featured, but alas, not a freebie.

That's all for now. I hope you'll take a little time to download and
experiment with some of these nifty Internet add-ons. See you next
time! --Bob Rankin
