Howdy, y'all! :)
In my last TOURBUS post I told you of a "true," U.S.-only Internet
urban legend warning you that
If you get an envelope from a company called the "Internal
Revenue Service," DO NOT OPEN IT! This group operates a scam
around this time every year
I neglected to tell you that if you choose to ignore envelopes from
the Internal Revenue Service, you should also ignore any subsequent
envelopes you receive from the "Department of Justice," the "Federal
Courts System," and the "Sheriff's Department." :)
I want to thank the folks at "The Freebie Times" and "Turbo-Tax" for
bringing today's journey of our little bus of Internet happiness to
you. Please take a moment to visit today's sponsors and thank them
for keeping TOURBUS on the road!
+--------------------[ TRY TURBO-TAX FOR FREE! ]--------------------+
Make your taxes fast and easy this year! Once you try Turbo-Tax,
you'll never go back to doing taxes the hard way. Turbo-Tax SAVES
YOU MONEY by pointing out DEDUCTIONS you may have missed, does all
the MATH and fills out the FORMS. The 1998 TAX LAWS are built-in
and Turbo-Tax walks you through the whole process - even helps you
find those IRS AUDIT triggers!
Try America's #1 RATED tax software FREE for 30 days. You'll also

On with the show ...
Today's tour can best be described as a "short attention span" version
of our little bus of Internet happiness. In other words, put on your
seatbelt.

ZDY2K
-----
Two weeks ago, I mentioned several different Web sites where you can
find information about the Y2K problem. I neglected to mention my
favorite Y2K information site: Ziff Davis' "ZDY2K" site at
http://www.zdnet.com/zdy2k/ .
The ZDY2K site provides the most levelheaded Y2K coverage I have seen.
For example, I was particularly impressed with their article titled
"What Supplies Do I Need for Y2K?" You can find this article at
http://www.zdnet.com/zdy2k/1999/01/5571.html .
Some of the advice in this article is a tad bit "northern-hemisphere-
specific" (I rather doubt that the recommendation to 'prepare for Y2K
as you would for a winter storm' would apply to our Australian
readers). Still, it is refreshing to see a Y2K article (and Web site)
that does not necessarily predict the end of the world come January
1st.
--------------
Mercury Rising
--------------
Over the past three years, TOURBUS has visited or mentioned the San
Jose Mercury News' "Mercury Center" at least a dozen times. Their
"Good Morning Silicon Valley" section (which can be found on the Web
at http://www.sjmercury.com/gmsv/gmsv_morning.shtml) is consistently
one of my favorite Internet resources.
Well, the folks at the Mercury Center are about to unveil a new high-
tech news Web site, and they are looking for 100 people to help them
beta test the site. If you are interested in helping them "kick the
tires" on their new site, hop on over to
http://spyglass1.sjmercury.com/cgi-bin/contests/register.cgi?beta
The beta testing begins in February, and the Mercury Center staff will
pick 100 users "from a broad geographic spectrum." According to the
folks at the Mercury Center,
There's no tangible reward other than our undying gratitude for
your frank feedback and the chance to influence the design of a
site that’s destined to become a prime destination for digerati
around the world.
Who could ask for anything more?

Web Builder's Toolkit
---------------------
As further proof that my parents have WAY too much free time, our last
stop is at my parents' Web Builder's Toolkit page at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~crispen/kellys_place/web_tools.html .
This is one of those pages that really doesn't need a lot of
explanation. If you are looking for a collection of links to the
absolute best Web design resources available -- from graphic design
and layout information to fonts and Paint Shop Pro plug-ins -- this
page is for you. And I am not just saying that because my parents
created it. :P
--------------------------------------
A Quick, Albeit Cryptic, Personal Note
--------------------------------------
I have been playing around with AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM) program
for the past couple of days, trying to decide if I will write about it
in a future TOURBUS post. If you have AIM and want to know my screen
name, take a look at my signature at the bottom of today's post. By
the way, if I do not respond to your IMs, please do not take that as a
sign that I do not love you anymore. I have a feeling that, now that
I have publicly released my screen name, I am going to be flooded with
about a squillion IMs. :)
