TODAY'S TOURBUS TOPIC: Finding Your Roots
Alex Haley's popular book and television series "Roots" spurred a
great surge of interest in genealogy - the process of discovering
our family roots. But back in the 70's, people didn't have the tools
we have today in the form of home computers, specialized software,
and the Internet. Today's TOURBUS will take you to the best starting
points for genealogical research, tools, and software.
But first, we urge you to visit our sponsors ACSM SUPPLIES and UGLIES
UNDIES. Please thank them for keeping the Bus on the road, and buy
lots of stuff while visiting their websites! :-)
+----------------- Bump UGLIES this Valentine's Day! ----------------+
What are UGLIES? They're the boxer shorts that are so ugly she'll
beg you to take 'em off. (We're serious here folks) A fun product
and the perfect gift for that special someone this Valentine's Day.
Stop by for a few laughs and the ugliest undies you'll ever see.

ANCESTRY.COM's Ancestry World Tree is billed as the largest, free
online database of family files available. The Ancestry World Tree
consists of millions of records submitted by thousands of genealogy
enthusiasts throughout the world.
They also offer the free Social Security Death Index database, with
over 56 million names, free lessons in genealogy research, and some
fee-based services for those who want to dig deeper.
A comprehensive index to over 49,000 genealogical resources on the
Internet. You'll find a list of links that point you to genealogical
research sites, all categorized & cross-referenced. It's like a
"card catalog" to the genealogical collection in the immense library
that is the Internet.
This site is particularly good, because it has links to genealogical
resources in many different countries. Over 1000 new links are added
each month!
ROOTS-L is a mailing list for people who are interested in genealogy.
Although there are others, ROOTS-L was the original Internet
genealogical mailing list, dating back to 1987. ROOTS-L has over
10,000 subscribers who have voluntarily maintained a useful collection
of files and databases.
The RootsWeb Surname List contains over half a million surnames and
contact information for genealogy researchers, and can be interactively
searched. The ROOTS-L Library has hundreds of text files on subjects
such as obtaining vital records, useful tips for beginners, book lists
from the Library of Congress, etc.
The FamilyTreeMaker website offers genealogy help, hints, and how-to's
for the beginner and expert alike. You can use family finder tools
to tap into their online genealogical indexes and records, or use
specialized Internet searching tools to scrub the web traces of your
family history.
Check out the online classes, Genealogy "How-To" Guide, professionally
written articles, Biography Maker, and a list of upcoming events.
Terri Lamb is an Web developer, consultant, and resident genealogist
for The Mining Company. Her site currently features a genealogy
software survey, Genealogy By Email, and a comprehensive set of
links to Genealogy FAQs, Genealogy for Beginners, Census Resources,
Family Associations, and International Organizations and more.
You'll find the software survey helpful if you're interested in
keeping your family tree on your computer. Just about every website
for genealogy software I could find says "We're #1" so this poll of
actual users will help you find the program that's right for you.
That's all for now. See you next time! --Bob Rankin
