Columbine High School
---------------------

After the recent tragedy in Colorado, I though it would be appropriate
if our first stop was at the "Columbine High School Crisis" homepage
at

.

While many media organizations have followed this story closely [two
Columbine High School students killed twelve fellow students and a
teacher before killing themselves], this Columbine High School Crisis
homepage was created by Columbine's school district as an information
conduit about the tragedy.

The school district has also created a Usenet newsgroup called the
"Columbine Crisis Discussion Group" at

news://jeffconet.jeffco.k12.co.us/columbine.crisis .

Most Web browsers should be able to access this. If your browser
cannot, contact your network administrator or Internet Service
Provider and ask for instructions.

As always, the folks at Yahoo News have been on top of this story,
creating a special "full coverage" page that includes links to

     - The latest news on the tragedy from ABC, AP, CNN, Reuters,
       and others.

     - An online message board where you can post your condolences.
[Actually, the full coverage page has a link to a Yahoo
message board at the top of the page, but you can also find
links to five other message boards if you scroll down the page
a bit -- just look in the left-hand column.]

     - Links to other news and media sources, including places where
you can find pictures and images, audio, video, and even
       magazine articles and editorials.

You can find Yahoo's Colorado School Shooting Full Coverage page at

http://headlines.yahoo.com/Full_Coverage/US/School_Violence/ .

Don't forget that the Full Coverage page is actually several layers
deep. To find even more information about this tragedy, just click on
the word "more" in the bottom right-hand corner of each of the page's
sections.

Finally, a personal comment: for the past three days, I have been
speaking at a conference of almost 4,000 educators, and I can attest
to the fact that the Columbine tragedy has shaken everyone. My
thoughts and prayers -- along with the thoughts and prayers of
millions of people around the world -- are with the friends and
families of the Columbine students.

NewsScan Daily
--------------

My list of favorite Internet tools changes from year to year, but the
one constant has always been Edupage. Created by John Gehl and
Suzanne Douglas back in 1992, Edupage was (and still is) a free email
newsletter that highlights the latest developments in the field of
information technology. Distributed three times a week, Edupage
offers one-paragraph snippets of the latest technology news culled
from the mainstream media. [You can find more about Edupage in my 25
February 1999 post that can be found in the TOURBUS archives at
http://www.tourbus.com/]

Well, John and Suzanne recently left Edupage and have created a new,
free email news service called NewsScan Daily. NewsScan Daily is a
5-day-a-week summary of significant information technology news.
And, like Edupage, NewScan Daily is distributed via email and offers
one-paragraph snippets of the latest technology news culled from the
mainstream media. In other words, if you liked Edupage, you'll
*love* NewsScan Daily!

You can subscribe to NewsScan Daily for free at

http://www.newsscan.com/ .

or you can sand an email letter to

     NewsScan@NewsScan.com

with the word 'subscribe' in the subject line. NewsScan is free, and
once you subscribe you will receive John and Suzanne's tech news
summaries five days a week.

I have been a big fan of John Gehl and Suzanne Douglas since I
discovered Edupage back in 1994 -- Roadmap workshop graduates will
remember that I mentioned Edupage in my "neat stuff" lesson -- and I
am truly excited about NewsScan. In fact, I can honestly say that
NewsScan now holds a proud position on my ever-shrinking "must read"
list. :)
