TODAY'S TOURBUS TOPIC: Bob's Top Ten - Part I
Hi All! Since we didn't do a BEST OF TOURBUS series this year, I've
decided to go back through the archives and summarize the issues I
thought were the most interesting from the last twelve months. I
picked these sites because they all have practical value, so you'll
want to visit each of these sites again.

InfoSpace
-----------
In the past few months, Infospace has become my favorite people finder
tool. In addition to white (individual) and yellow (business) page
listings for the USA and many other countries, you can do reverse
lookups on Phone Numbers, Street Addresses, Email Addresses, and Area
Code.
And here's a little undocumented trick I stumbled into: Infospace can
tell you the names of everyone on your street. Just omit the street
number on the reverse address screen.

BookMarklets
-------------
Bookmarklets are one of the coolest and most useful ideas I've seen in
a long time. They are a simple combination of browser bookmarks and
Javascript code. You don't have to be a programmer to use them, and
bookmarklets can add macros and additional features to your browser,
whether it's Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
By assigning a bookmarklet to a permanent button on your Navigator
Personal Toolbar or Explorer Links Bar, you can add some very useful
features to your browser. Get the full story here:

Bots and Intelligent Agents
-----------------------------
Remember back when you were a kid, watching The Jetsons and wishing
someone would invent a robot to do your chores? Decades later, I
still haven't realized the promise of a machine to run the vacuum or
clear the dishes off the table, but nowadays there ARE some useful
robots roaming the Internet, ready to help you with shopping,
information gathering and other tasks.
Do you find yourself running the same search engine query on a regular
basis? Let a bot take over. Are you tired of scanning the classifieds
or shopping sites in search of the best deal? Send a bot to do your
shopping. BotSpot is the place to go if you want to find bots or learn
more. They classify bots and intelligent agents by subject, with
reviews and historical perspectives. Maybe you'll find a bot to
automate some online activity that you do by hand today.

Speed Up Your Surfing
-----------------------
Sometimes "surfing the web" seems more like pushing a fully loaded
dogsled through the desert. But there are some easy, low-cost steps
you can take to speed things up considerably. In the 29 Dec 1998
issue, I listed several ideas you can use to get your browser in the
fast lane on the infobahn. Here's a quick summary:
- NetSonic: A web accelerator that tries to speed up your surfing by
guessing where you'll go next.
NetSonic - http://www.web3000.com
- BoostWeb: Another browser accelerator, which claims to make your
surfing up to seven times faster using a proxy server that
compresses web info before sending it to your browser.
BoostWeb - http://www.boostweb.net
- MTUSPEED: A great little utility that helps you optimize your Win95
Internet connection. MTUSPEED tweaks your Windows registry to give
some users a boost of 30% or more.

"Find Patrick's Face" and Warp The Busdrivers
---------------------------------------------
Don't forget to take the POLL on the Tourbus website. Pop in and see
if you can find the Real Patrick Crispen. When you're done, play
"Warp the Busdrivers". Guaranteed fun!
That's all for now, see you next time! --Bob Rankin
