On with the show ...
As most long-time TOURBUS riders know, besides being the co-author of
TOURBUS your fearless bus driver is also the Internet Mythologist for
WGN Radio in Chicago. You can hear me debunk Internet myths and urban
legends every Wednesday night around 11:20-ish PM Central Time (GMT -
6) during the Steve and Johnnie Show. To listen, tune your radio to
AM 720 [WGN Radio is a "clear channel" station, meaning its signal is
so powerful that, at night, it reaches 38 states and most of Canada!].
Also, if you have Real Networks' free Real Player software installed
on your computer, you can listen to WGN Radio on the Web by pointing
your Web browser to
http://www.wgnradio.com/ .
During last night's show, Steve and Johnnie introduced me to a news
site I want to share with you today:
---------------------------------------------
The Newsroom Homepage at AssignmentEditor.com
---------------------------------------------
Created by Jim Lichtenstein, Managing Editor at WBBM-TV (CBS) in
Chicago, The Newsroom Homepage at AssignmentEditor.com is a free
resource for anyone interested in finding news and information online.
To find the site, just point your Web browser to
http://assignmenteditor.com/ .
From one simple page, you can click on hundreds of links to connect
with virtually any newspaper in the world, check news wires, access
maps and people finders, use [most of] the top search engines, visit
sports and entertainment sites, read gossip columnists and critics, do
research, go shopping ... and the list goes on.
Lichtenstein originally intended the AssignmentEditor.com site to be
accessible only to professional journalists, but because of tremendous
public response he decided to make the site free and available to
everyone. According to Lichtenstein,
As a TV Journalist, I wanted easy, one stop shopping to find
news, and do the research every newsroom, or person interested in
the news, would need. That site didn't exist, so I built it.
I'm thrilled and humbled to think that thousands of people who
sway public opinion each day make AssignmentEditor.com their
gateway to the Internet
The AssignmentEditor.com site is well organized, and news junkies
around the world will appreciate the time and effort Lichtenstein took
to create a one-stop starting point for all things news-related. If
you like surfing the Net for the latest news and information, you will
LOVE AssignmentEditor.com.
I do have three [small] complaints about the site, though:
1. AssignmentEditor.com's list of search engines does not include
AltaVista [although it does include a link to AltaVista's
'Babelfish' translation service]. Considering that AltaVista
is the 10th most popular Web property in the world, this is a
significant oversight.
2. AssignmentEditor.com has no links to Slate or Salon magazines.
In the case of the former, I'll admit that I am a BIG fan of
Scott Shuger's "Today's Papers" column, but so are many people
in newsrooms around the world. Not including a link to
Slate's "Todays Papers" on a site designed for journalists is,
again, a significant oversight.
3. AssignmentEditor.com's list of links is particularly skewed
towards an American audience. For example, the site has
links to forty-six US newspapers but to only eleven world
newspapers, and their "Cop Stuff" doesn't link to any law
enforcement agency outside of the US [Lichtenstein should at
least offer a link to Interpol].
Still, AssignmentEditor.com is brand new and omissions are to be
expected. And, even considering these omissions, the site is still an
amazing resource for anyone who wants to keep up with the latest news
from around the corner or around the world.

Riders' Revenge: The News Sites
-------------------------------
Following last week's TOURBUS post about international news sites,
several TOURBUS riders sent me email recommending some other news
sites to visit. John Crawford recommended CEO Express at
http://ceoexpress.com/ .
CEO Express is actually quite similar to AssignmentEditor.com,
although CEO Express focuses more on business news and research. CEO
Express is a GREAT site for anyone playing the markets.
Richard Tetu (the e in his last name is accented) recommended a news
site I completely overlooked: the Christian Science Monitor at
http://www.csmonitor.com/ .
Tetu adds that
Their founding principle is to harm no one, and except for the
religious article in the print edition, you can't tell the
specific religious philosophy behind it. Their journalists win
tons of prizes, their photography is great, their investigative
reporting is straight on (they uncovered the killing fields of
Serbia, for example), and their people get in places more
politically militant journalists can't visit
Finally, Mike Peterson recommends a WONDERFUL page in the UK that has
links to FIFTY-FIVE different non-US newspapers:
http://www.lifestyle.co.uk/fawo.htm .
This page shows you the first twenty-five hits. To see the rest,
click on the appropriate page number at the bottom of the screen.
I have some more news sites your fellow riders recommended, but I'll
save those for a future post. :)

Another Oopsie!
---------------
Last week, I gave the incorrect address for the BBC World Service's
Middle East News page. The correct address is
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/middle_east/default.htm .
Sorry about that. :)
