One major Internet trend is moving functionality away from software
running on your computer to web-based applications. In today's issue
we'll focus on one website that allows you to connect to Usenet, the
Internet's discussion arena, without any special newsreader software.

 TAP INTO USENET WITH DEJA.COM
===============================

If you've been reading Tourbus for long, you probably know and love
Deja.com (formerly called DejaNews) as the "searchable archive of
Usenet". Over the years, Deja has evolved from a simple Usenet
search tool into a fully integrated Usenet environment that allows
you to read, post, subscribe, and search Usenet content.

Deja does all these things in a web-based application, without the
requirement to download or install any software on your computer:

  * Manages subscriptions to Usenet newsgroups. You can
subscribe to get daily individual emails, daily summaries or
full-text digests of your favorite newsgroups.
  * Remembering which articles you've already read.
  * Allows posting a message to a newsgroup.
  * Searches for postings that contain your search words
  * Tracks specific threads (sequences of related postings) or
newsgroups, and sends email alerts about new posts

This might solve several problems for you:

  - you don't want to install and configure newsreader software
  - your company does not allow or support Usenet access
  - you want to monitor certain newsgroups or keywords, but don't
have time to constantly scan Usenet
  - DejaNews does not store binaries, and filters out most spam,
so you are unlikely to accidentally download stuff that might
result in an interview with the HR manager.

Other Stuff at Deja
-------------------

I really like the convenient and easy access to Usenet that Deja.com
provides. It used to be true that participating in Usenet required
people to learn geeky jargon and use complicated newsreader software,
but Deja's web-based interface makes it friendly and accessible no
matter what kind of computer you have.

In the past year or so, DejaNews transformed itself into Deja.com,
and in the process they shifted their focus from just Usenet to a
product rating/review service that links to both Usenet and Deja
Community forums. From the Deja help info:

> We have a new, more flexible homepage that brings you closer to
> the information you need before you buy anything. The home page
> can now better inform you about what's hot, what's not and what
> real consumers are saying about products.

The point I want to make is that even though the focus seems to be
on the product ratings & reviews, you can ignore all that if you just
want to tap into Usenet at Deja. To try out this service, visit

 COMING SOON
=============

In future TOURBUS issues, we'll continue looking at web-based
services such as file storage, office and productivity applications.
Are they ready for prime time? Are they secure? Stay tuned and
we'll find out!
