Y GO 2 WASTE?

I recently read that as many as four out of every ten households in
the United States stockpiled food in preparation for a Y2K disaster.
And Americans weren't the only ones storing food -- millions of
households around the world did the same.
Of course, Y2K came and went without any major disruptions, so the
question most people are left asking is "WHAT ON EARTH AM I GOING TO
DO WITH ALL OF THIS SPAM AND RAMEN NOODLES?" Well, with hundreds of
millions people around the world suffering from hunger or malnutrition,
why not donate your stockpiled Y2K provisions to your local food bank?
Here in the US, an organization called "America's Second Harvest" has
launched a national food drive called "Y GO 2 WASTE." You can find
out more about the food drive at

This page has a pull-down menu that will help you locate your nearest
US food bank. The Y Go 2 Waste campaign runs from January 15th
through February 15th, but many local food banks have already started
their own Y2K food drives.

supplies to help fight the war on hunger, check out

The Hunger Site -- that wonderful site where you can make a donation
of food to hungry people around the world just by clicking on a button
-- has a HUGE list of links to hunger relief organizations around the
world. This list, coupled with your local phone book, should help you
locate your nearest food bank or relief organization.

the New Year than by helping those who are less fortunate than we are?

HOW FAST?

Have you ever been surfing the Net and thought to yourself "there is
no way in HECK I am surfing as fast as my modem says I am!" Want to
know how fast you REALLY are surfing? Well, our friends at MSN's
Computing Central have created a free, online Bandwith Speed Test at
http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp .
Visit this page with any browser -- even Netscape! -- and the page
will (eventually) tell you your connection speed. How? Well, the
Bandwith Speed Test is actually two web pages. The first page is kind
of small, and the second is astoundingly large (537 Kb!). Each page
contains
a hidden data file in the header area of the page. When either
of these pages loads, it notes the time just before and just
after the data file loads, then uses this information and the
size of the data file to calculate the rate at which the data
arrived at your computer.
Besides telling you the real speed of your Internet connection, the
Bandwith Speed Test page also has a WONDERFUL questions and answers
section that every Internet user should be required to read. The
questions and answers section contains the best explanations for slow
Net connections I have seen in a long time. :)

THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA ... WELL, TENNESSEE, ACTUALLY

Finally, alert TOURBUS rider Nila Patterson recently informed me that,
despite news reports to the contrary, the lights did NOT stay on
everywhere on New Year's Day. In fact, both Hickman and Perry County
in Tennessee were plunged into darkness early on the morning of
January 1st.
The cause? Well, according to The (Nashville) Tennessean, "it wasn't
the Y2K bug. It was the Y2K rodent -- a squirrel ..." The Tennessean
reports that
The electricity, which [the Tennessee Valley Authority] creates
and sells to local distributors, was crackling through the lines
again at 9:42 a.m.
The fate of the squirrel could not be determined yesterday but
the assumption is that it made it no further into the millennium.
