Howdy, y'all, and greetings from beautiful Tuscaloosa, Alabama! Well,
once again, I am feeling a little disappointed because I was not
picked in the NBA draft. Of course, that probably has something to do
with the fact that your fearless bus driver has absolutely no
basketball talent whatsoever. But, still, it would have been nice to
have been ASKED! :P

Gray's Anatomy
--------------

Back in March, we visited the Merck Manual Home Edition at

http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual_home/contents.htm

Unlike the original Merck Manual (which was written in "physician-
speak"), the Home Edition uses everyday language to give patients,
their families, and all non-health care professionals information
about diseases, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The Merck
Manual Home Edition is arguably one of the best medical references on
the Net. And, best of all, it is absolutely FREE! Woo-hoo! :)

Wait. It gets better. Shortly after the folks at Merck posted their
Home Edition to the Net, our friends at Bartleby.com posted Henry
Gray's "Anatomy of the Human Body" at

http://www.bartleby.com/107/ .

That's right, folks. Gray's Anatomy -- all 1,396 pages of text and
all 1,247 illustrations -- is now online! FREE!

Even though the real-world version of Gray's Anatomy in kind of thick
and intimidating (like me), the online version is actually quite easy
to both read and use. The online version is divided into almost 300
different sections from embryology to surface anatomy. You can browse
through any of the book's sections from the main homepage at
http://www.bartleby.com/107/ .

For more in-depth information, however, check out the book's
encyclopedic subject index at

http://www.bartleby.com/107/s0.html

The subject index is deceptively simple, but it contains almost 13,000
different entries that link you directly to their respective pages in
the text.

Of course, Gray's Anatomy is most famous for its astounding
illustrations of the human body. And this is where the online version
of the book excels. You can browse through thumbnail versions of all
of the book's 1,247 illustrations at

http://www.bartleby.com/107/indexillus.html

To see a larger magnification of a particular illustration, just click
on its thumbnail. Some of the illustrations are rather large by Net
standards and may take a while to download, but their clarity is
amazing. In fact, many of the illustrations are in color and haven't
changed much since the first edition of Gray's Anatomy was published
in 1859! [I guess Mr. Gray believed in getting it right the first
time.]

Anyway, if you are looking for one of the best online resources for
*medical* information, check out the online version of the Merck
Manual Home Edition at

http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual_home/contents.htm

If you are looking for one of the best online resources for anatomy
and physiology information, however, check out the online version of
Gray's "Anatomy of the Human Body" at

http://www.bartleby.com/107/ .

And, of course, if you are looking for a picture of something thick
and intimidating, check out

http://www.netsquirrel.com/crispen/my_pictures.html

I really do need to go on a diet. :)

Johnnie show every weeknight around 11:20-ish PM Central Time (GMT -6)
to hear my latest exploits in the windy city. :)
