On with the show ...

-----------------------------------
Don't be a fool ... STAY IN SCHOOL!
-----------------------------------

If you have been on our little bus of Internet happiness for a while,
you will remember that it took your fearless bus driver a little
longer than usual to get his undergraduate degree. Some students are
on the four-year plan, others the five-year plan, and even a few take
6 years to earn their degree. Me? Well, I was on the THIRTEEN-year
plan. :)

One of the things I learned in my undergraduate career (and, believe
me, it was a CAREER) is that college students receive ABSURD discounts
on all sorts of stuff. Buy Microsoft Office 2000 Professional on the
street and you can expect to pay at least US$450; college students can
purchase that same software for $199. If you visit Newsweek's Web
site [which was recently eaten up by MSNBC -- what's up with that!?],
the best price you can get for a one-year subscription is $42.66;
college students can get that same, one-year subscription for $29.15.

Now can you see why I stayed in college so long? Companies offer
college students discounts of up to 70% off retail prices on
computers, software, books, magazines, financial services,
telecommunications services, and more. Why? By attracting students
when they are young (and broke), companies hope that these students
will become life-long, loyal customers.

Now for the cool part. If you are taking classes at an accredited
college or university, even if you are on the 13-year or even the 50-
year plan, you are eligible for these discounts. SO GET YOUR BUTT
BACK IN SCHOOL! :)

Of course since TOURBUS is an Internet newsletter, you are probably
drooling at the possibility of saving a BUNDLE on computer software
and hardware. Where should you start? Well, if you have a current
college ID, the best place to start is at your college's main
bookstore. With a few exceptions, most college bookstores have a
modest selection of deeply-discounted, major software titles like
Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Norton
SystemWorks, and so on. Don't be fooled by the lack of titles --
most college bookstores are willing to special-order any software
title you want (just make sure ahead of time that the software you
want comes with an educational discount).

Your school's bookstore probably won't have many computers in stock
(remember, your bookstore's main goal is to gouge you on textbooks,
not to help you save money on computers), but your bookstore WILL
have information on specially-priced computers from Apple, Dell,
Compaq, and so on. The discounts may not be substantial -- maybe
5 or 10% off, if you're lucky -- but every penny counts. You can
either order your new computer through your bookstore or directly
from the manufacturer.

If you don't feel like making a trek to your school's bookstore, try
hopping on the Internet. Many college and university bookstores are
now online. For example, Pepperdine students (like me!) can order
stuff online at

      http://arachnid.pepperdine.edu/wavenet/main.htm

Remember, though, that most college and university bookstores only
offer educational discounts to their own students -- an Ohio State
University student wouldn't be able to order discounted software
from Pepperdine's bookstore.

Some online merchants like buy.com, CDW, and Egghead also offer
educational discounts, but you have to call their 800 number and
specifically ask for a discount. Of course, doing this is kind of hit
and miss -- sometimes you can get a discount, sometimes you can't.

That's where today's stop comes in. [Man, was this a long intro or
WHAT?!] There is a new Web site at

      http://www.edu.com/

that has rapidly become "student discount central." edu.com shows you
almost every discount available to college students, from computers to
books to magazines. Best of all, you can order most these discounted
items straight from edu.com. In other words, edu.com is like buy.com
for students!

You have to register with edu.com before you can purchase anything,
but the registration process is simple. There is one small catch,
though: to make sure that you are eligible to receive educational
discounts, the folks at edu.com are probably going to ask you to send
them a copy of your student ID. Once they receive that, though, you
are free to go shopping. :)

I'll let you explore the edu.com site on your own. If you or one of
your children are in college and you're looking for a way to save a
heck of a lot of money on software, magazines, books, and so on, take
advantage of the incredible educational discounts available through
your college bookstore, online merchants (like buy.com), and Web sites
like edu.com. And if you have been waiting for a reason to go back to
school, well ... here ya go! :)

That's it for this week. Have a safe and happy weekend, and we'll
talk again next week.
