Howdy, y'all, and greetings once again from beautiful Tuscaloosa,
Alabama! :)

Well, it is finally September. I think we all know what that means.
Soon, some of the best athletes in the world will gather in one place
to stretch the limits of human strength and endurance and to celebrate
the true brotherhood of sports. But enough about Alabama Football ...
:P

Seriously, though, the Sydney Olympic Games start in less than two
weeks. That's the good news. The bad news is that because of the
International Olympic Committee's silly assumption that Web-casting
the games would cheapen the multi-billion dollar television rights
they have already sold to NBC et al, the Web really won't be the place
to turn to "watch" the Olympics. That's a shame.

We'll talk more about the Olympics and the myriad of Olympics Web
sites next week. Until then, I'd like to give a tip of the hat to the
folks who keep our little bus of Internet happiness on the road week
after week. TOURBUS is made possible by the kind support of our
sponsors. A big thanks to "CoolSavings," "CashPromotions," and This
Is True for keeping the Bus rolling. Please visit and say thanks!

Online Tutorials
----------------

One of the greatest things about the World Wide Web is that you can
use it to learn just about anything. Interested in learning how to
hang drywall? The Web can be your guide. One of the best drywall
tutorials is at http://www.hometime.com/projects/conbasic.htm . Want
to learn how to braise, broil, poach, roast, and saute'? The Web can
help you learn that too. You can learn the "five fundamentals" at
http://www.epicurious.com/b_ba/b04_fivebasics/intro.html . In fact,
there are so many free, Web-based tutorials out there it is hard to
know where to start, let alone how to find the exact tutorial you are
looking for.

There are some great, all-encompassing "how-to" Web sites like
www.learn2.com and www.ehow.com (two exceptional sites worthy of
their own TOURBUS posts), but wouldn't it be great if you could just
go to ONE place and find the tutorial you are looking for? You know,
kind of like a search engine/directory of the best tutorials on the
Web.

Well, such a beast exists, it is called "FindTutorials.com," and you
can find it on the Web at

http://www.findtutorials.com/ .

FindTutorials.com is a Yahoo-like directory and search engine for Web-
based tutorials. You can browse through the site by topic -- from
Arts & Humanities to Sports -- or you can search for a particular
tutorial by keyword. The site also borrows an idea from our friends
at Amazon.com, letting you rate, review, and even post comments about
any of the tutorials in FindTutorials.com's database.

The site also offers a "Best Tutorials" section, but that's really a
misnomer. The Best Tutorials section actually shows you the most
popular tutorials -- the ones with the most hits -- rather than the
tutorials that have the highest customer reviews. That's unfortunate,
and something that the folks at FindTutorials.com will have to fix.

Still, it is an amazing site. I spent about half an hour just
browsing though all of FindTutorials.com's links. The site is still
growing, so there are a few dead ends (for example, there is no link
to a tutorial on how to download). The links they do have, however,
are pretty impressive.

More Educational Discounts
--------------------------

After last week's post about how you can get educational discounts on
all sorts of stuff ranging from software to magazines, I received a
bunch of emails from educators asking if they too could take advantage
of these discounts. The answer is a definite maybe. If you are a
college or university faculty or staff member, check with your campus'
bookstore to see if you qualify for the educational discount on
software. At Bama, I know the discount extends to everyone on
payroll. It may be different at your school.

I do know that ALL U.S. educators -- K-12 and college -- can get
magazine discounts from American Collegiate Marketing at

https://www.campuscommons.com/ .

Longtime TOURBUS rider and dear friend Joyce Conklin suggested that I

might want to tell people who've finished their 4/5/13 yr plan
AND have gone into teaching that similar discounts on software
are at least available for teachers at CreationEngine.

      http://www.creationengine.com/

Dr. Mary Kate Hiatt also suggest that educators check out School
World:

      http://www.schoolworld.com/

School World's site isn't much to look at, but Dr. Hiatt has
"purchased from them several times and found they have the deepest
discounts I have found."

Several riders also wrote in to tell me that educational priced
software is not always identical to the regular, commercial version of
that same software. For example, the educational version of
Macromedia Dreamweaver came with a trial version of Allaire Homesite
on the CD, while the commercial version of Dreamweaver came with a
fully-registered version of Homesite. Check before you purchase.

Also keep in mind that many software manufacturers frown on your using
educational priced software for non-educational, commercial purposes.
If you purchase an educational copy of Dreamweaver and use it to build
the next Yahoo, the nice folks at Macromedia might be a tad bit
distressed. :(

That's it for this week. Have a safe and happy weekend, and we'll talk
about them there 'limpics next week. :)
