On with the show ...

For the past couple of weeks, your fearless bus driver has been busy
working on two absolutely humongous projects: a knowledge management
group assignment for one of my classes at Pepperdine and a complete
rewrite of five of my most popular PowerPoint presentations. This may
seem a little self-congratulatory -- if it does, I apologize -- but I
thought you'd like to take a look at both. They're pretty cool, even
if I do say so myself. :)

--------------------
Knowledge Management
--------------------

One of the most prevalent business buzzwords over the past couple of
years has been "KM" (or "knowledge management"). KM is usually what
follows after someone in upper management nervously exclaims, "EEEK ...
we need to locate and capture ALL the information our company has and
hold on to it tightly before it is too late!"

What *IS* knowledge management? Well, the textbook definition is that
it is

The systematic process of finding, selecting, organizing,
distilling and presenting information in a way that improves an
employee's comprehension in a specific area of interest

     http://www.bus.utexas.edu/kman/glossary.htm

Zzzz ... ... sorry, I dozed off there for a second. :)

One of my classes at Pepperdine -- Dr. Sue Talley's class on "Shaping
the Learning Environment" -- recently posed a really interesting
question: can knowledge management work not only in business but
elsewhere ... even schools?

Well, that's what Gano Butcher, Danny Espinal, Clarence Griffin, and I
tried to figure out. The result of our little investigation can be
found at

http://www.netsquirrel.com/pepperdine/edc634/km/index.html .

I certainly don't mean to beat my own drum, but this is a pretty cool
resource, especially if you have heard about knowledge management in
passing and want to learn a little more about what it is, how it works,
and where it is going.

I have to warn you, though, that the first page of this assignment is
kind of big. That was deliberate. This assignment took so absurdly
long to finish that I decided to stage a minor protest by putting a
really *HUGE* graphic on the first page. Don't tell Dr. Talley. :P

Our knowledge management page has five sections:

     1. A paper on "School as a Learning Organization" written by
        Clarence Griffin.

     2. A paper by Danny Espinal on some of the steps involved in
        implementing a knowledge management system.

     3. An outline, written by yours truly, of a really thick KM book
titled "Enabling Knowledge Creation." This outline is a GREAT
place to learn more about the past, present, and future of KM.
The outline may be HUGE, but it has some great information in
it that you are welcome to steal. :)

     4. A collection of links compiled by Gano Butcher that points to
articles focusing on 10 different areas in current KM research,
        theory, and practice.

     5. Links to some additional KM resources and articles from around
        the world..

Take a look and tell me what you think. I get the feeling that KM, in
one form or another, is going to be around for a while and I reckon
we're all going to need to know a little more about this topic in the
not-too-distant future.

New PowerPoint Presentations
----------------------------

The other project that has consumed my time over the past couple of
weeks has been the complete rewrite of five of my most popular PowerPoint
presentations:

     1. Designing Online Communities ... on a SHOESTRING Budget

     2. Stop Searching and Start FINDING -- Crispen's Guide to Finding
and Evaluating Resources on the Net

     3. Web Page Design, Part One: People Actually Get PAID To Do This?

     4. Web Page Design, Part Two: Internet Graphics for the
        Artistically Challenged

     5. The Completely Unrehearsed, Totally Unorganized, Frequently
        Asked Questions Session

Now for the cool part. All of these presentations? They're yours. Go
to my Web site at

http://www.netsquirrel.com/classroom/

and download what you want. Consider it my gift to you. :)

One small request, though: if you know of any conferences that are
looking for someone to do some one hour presentations on how to use
technology (or six-hour, hands-on sessions on how to use Dreamweaver),
keep me in mind. :)

--------------------
A Special Thank You!
--------------------

I want to the folks at the Northwest Council for Computer Education
[http://www.ncce.org/] for inviting me to speak at their conference in
Spokane, Washington, this past week. You may not have heard of NCCE,
but they have been holding ed tech conferences for the past THIRTY
YEARS! It was an amazing honor to have been invited, I had a great
time, and I thank NCCE once again.

That's it for today. Have a safe and happy week, and we'll talk again
in a few days. :)
