Sulfen-WHAT?
------------

By now, you have probably received a virus warning telling you that a
particular file on your computer -- sulfenbk.exe -- is actually a
horrible virus that will activate on June 1st and do all sorts of
nasty things to your PC. The warning even provides instructions on
how to delete this virus. How considerate.

Guess what, folks. THE WARNING IS A HOAX! June 1st has come and
gone. SULFENBK.EXE is *NOT* a virus, it is an essential Windows
utility used to restore long filenames. DO NOT DELETE IT!

If you or any of your friends have fallen victim to this hoax, check
out my website at

http://netsquirrel.com/

for instructions on how to restore SULFENBK.EXE on both Windows 98 and
ME.

More Science News (Riders' Revenge)
-----------------------------------

The best part about driving our little bus of Internet happiness week
after week is the feedback that I get from all y'all in the back of
the bus. A couple weeks ago I wrote about neat science news sites on
the Internet

     http://www.newscientist.co.uk/

     with its free newsletter

To sign up for the newsletter, just key in your e-mail address in the
box in the upper right hand corner of New Scientist's homepage

Susan Gawarecki recommends the Sigma Xi daily science newsletter. The
newsletter is a roundup of science stories appearing each day in the
general media. To see the latest Sigma Xi newsletter, hop on over to

http://www.mediaresource.org/news.htm .

If this looks like something you would like to receive each weekday,
you can find instructions on how to subscribe to the newsletter at

http://www.mediaresource.org/instruct.htm

By the way, Sigma Xi -- http://www.sigmaxi.org/ -- is a scientific
research society not to be confused with Sigma Chi --
http://www.sigmachi.com/index.html -- a scientific drinking society.
[I'M KIDDING!]

Jack Callan suggests that you visit

     http://www.sciencenews.org/

A site put up by the excellent weekly Science News magazine,
Shows selected stories of the current issue (with archives).
Consider a real subscription (though expensive, you'll see a lot
of things here, FIRST). They also offer CD Rom archives for sale
of full text over past years on the site.

Jay Singleton concurs, adding that

Science News covers many areas but summarizes them, they then
provide links to sources and references.

And finally, no one mentioned this but I forgot to mention the
GREATEST science news site of them all: The Annals of Improbable
Research at

http://www.improb.com/

Enjoy. :)

Two from the Spam Front
-----------------------

The big news this week was Hormel's announcement that they no longer
object to people calling unsolicited commercial e-mail "spam."
However,

if the term is to be used, it should be used in all lower-case
letters to distinguish it from our trademark SPAM, which should
be used with all uppercase letters

Remember, "spam" (all lower-case) is any unsolicited commercial e-mail
message and "SPAM" (all upper-cased) is a canned luncheon meat with
the shelf life of gravel. :P

To read Hormel's statement, check out

http://www.spam.com/ci/ci_in.htm .

In a related story, David Colker at the Los Angeles Times recently
spent the week responding to many of the spams that he received. The
results of his investigation are eye opening, especially if you've
ever considered responding to those spams that offer to give you a
college degree for your life experience or to erase a bad credit
history. You can find Colker's "Seven Days of Spam" article at

http://www.latimes.com/business/cutting/features/lat_junk010503.htm .

If I owned the Internet, I would require *EVERYONE* to read Colker's
"Seven Days of Spam" article along with Bob Sullivan's "Watch a hacker
work the system" article at

http://stacks.msnbc.com/news/550567.asp

If these two articles don't scare you away from ever even THINKING
about responding to a spam, nothing will.

That's it for today. Have a safe and happy week and we'll talk again
soon. :)
