Thanks for supporting the sponsors who keep TOURBUS rolling. Did you
get your copy of Norton SystemWorks 2002 yet? Some readers have asked
me if this deal is for real. It's nothing mysterious... you get the
CD-roms without all the bulky & expensive packaging/manuals. The
software company gains a user, and hopes that you might buy an upgrade
in the future. Everyone wins.

 ALTAVISTA GOING STALE?
------------------------

I've said for several years that AltaVista was my favorite search
engine, but that may have to change. According to the Market Position
newsletter, AltaVista has not updated a large part of its database for
more than three months now. Website owners who have submitted their
sites for inclusion in the AltaVista database are frustrated because
they aren't getting listed. And search users are obviously not
getting up-to-date results.

This fact seems not to be lost on consumers. According to industry
metrics, AltaVista has lost millions of monthly visitors in the past
year while Google has gained almost the same number. Some say the
company is in financial trouble, so if you're a hardcore AV fan, you
might want to start checking out the alternatives.

 GETTING GOOGLEY-EYED
----------------------

I find myself using Google a lot more lately, because I like the
bare-bones user interface and generally excellent relevancy of
results. Image searches, Google's Usenet archive (Google Groups) and
the downloadable Google Toolbar make it even more appealing to me.
Try an experiment... enter a few search keywords at your favorite
search engine site, and try the same thing at Google.

 THAT'S ALL (THE WEB) FOLKS!
-----------------------------

Tara Calishain, a former Guest Driver here at Tourbus, and publisher
of the ResearchBuzz newsletter, thinks AllTheWeb.com is a seriously
under-rated contender on the search engine scene. Tara says "I have
liked the last few versions of AllTheWeb, but the newest version with
the most excellent news search makes it a must-see." A press release
I got this week says that AllTheWeb is indexing news stories from over
three thousand online sources. It also claims that AlltheWeb is
"twice as fresh as Google, with six times more news." Yummy... does
that come with whipped cream?

Tara says she'll be doing a Google/AllTheWeb faceoff for ResearchBuzz
in the near future. She's also got a good article about the addition
of paid listings from Goto/Overture in the Yahoo search results. If
you'd like to check out her site and newsletter look here:

 LYCOS RELAUNCHES
------------------

Danny Sullivan, Editor of The Search Engine Report, says that Lycos is
much improved after an early November facelift. Sullivan described the
old Lycos as "terrible mishmash of poor results and confusion" that
focused too much on Lycos' own content and paid listings. The new
layout is easier to use, with improved relevancy of results.

In addition to search results provided by FAST SEARCH, Lycos offers
content from the human-powered Open Directory, and provides a list of
Lycos categories at the end of the search results, which may help you
find what you're looking for quicker than poking through the search
engine hits. If you haven't tried Lycos recently, pop on over and
give it a test drive!

If you need the latest search engine news, I highly recommend both
Sullivan's monthly Search Engine Report, and SearchDay - a free daily
newsletter from Search Engine Watch featuring web search news,
reviews, tools, tips, and search engine headlines.
